Where to honeymoon?

After sharing your big day with friends and family, your honeymoon is the time for you as a couple to build holiday memories that will last a lifetime.

Make sure that these memories are great ones, by considering a few key things when planning your holiday. There are two schools of thought when it comes to how you should choose your destination. Consider, whether trying something completely new for your honeymoon is the right choice for you. If you are normally a ‘fly and flop’ kind of couple, trying something more adventurous could give you the great once in a lifetime holiday memories that you always dreamed of, or it could leave you wishing you had gone with your trusty usual choice! Alternatively, a completely different experience to what you are used to could give you the once in a lifetime experience that everyone is looking for in their honeymoon.

Everyone has an opinion on what is best for a honeymoon, and the internet and your friends will be full of suggestions and photos of great locations and stunning scenery. Only YOU know what the perfect honeymoon for you is.

Wedding planning is hugely exciting, however even if you have a wedding planner it can be tiring. Combine this with the adrenaline of the day itself and this may influence how you choose to spend some of the time on your honeymoon. You may want to consider having some relaxation at the start of your honeymoon, even if you ultimately plan to do something action-packed to make sure that you recharge your batteries and are ready to go. To get the most of your time away you could choose to mix up several locations. The design of this is key, you don’t want to find yourself trying to explore the place you are in and find yourself actually seeing nothing as you are always packing up and moving to the next location.

How much time you have is also key to how far you want to travel. If you only have a few days then a long haul destination is probably not for you.

The time of year that you marry will be a huge factor in deciding where to choose for your honeymoon. To help you to choose the right part of the world for the best weather we have given you some ideas.

During our colder winter months, a long haul honeymoon will allow you to find the sunnier weather. From December to April, the Caribbean is the perfect place to relax. Each country has its own culture so the choice is endless. Beautiful scenery and great dive sites abound in St Lucia. Try zip-wiring through the rainforest and the tea plantations of St Kitts and Nevis. If you simply cannot decide, why not consider island hopping?

Australia offers something for everyone and with 330 truly idyllic islands of the South pacific just a short hop away, what better way to unwind than island hopping amongst beautiful scenery, deep blue lagoons and pristine white sandy beaches.

The driest month of the year in Vietnam is February, which means it is a great time to visit all that the country has to offer. Take a trip along the Mekong delta to visit the floating markets, or marvel at the natural beauty of Ha Long Bay. There might even be time to fit in some relaxation in one of Vietnam’s unspoilt beach and spa resorts.

For something a little closer to home, or maybe a ‘Minimoon’ it is still a good time to visit Iceland and hopefully spot the Northern Lights. February is carnival month in Venice and an unforgettable experience. Lengthen your stay by combining it with a trip to Rome or Florence.

Borneo is at its best in March. Whilst most famous for its orangutans and probosci's monkeys, a visit to a neighbouring Indonesian island to watch the green turtles lay their eggs is highly recommended.

If you feel slightly more adventurous, an overnight trek to the top of Mount Kinabalu is a magical experience followed by a well-earned rest, relaxing on the beaches of Kota Kinabalu.

The winter months in Dubai and Oman, ahead of the soaring summer temperatures, make a great place to visit or as a ‘stop off’ on the way to the Indian Ocean.

As good all year round destinations due to their warm months, the Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius are also considered some of the most romantic places to honeymoon. Overwater bungalows straddle azure blue water and white sandy beaches adorn sheltered coves.

During the most popular wedding months of the summer, the weather a bit closer to home makes for wonderful opportunities for romantic honeymoons. With 11 hours of sunshine in August, Italy provides a sensational backdrop wherever you are. Stay on the Amalfi coast, hire a beautiful Tuscan villa or go wine tasting in Chianti.

Bali and Sri Lanka are both popular honeymoon destinations during our summer months. Beautiful boutique hotels provide idyllic spa and wellness facilities – so just relax!

Africa offers something throughout most months of the year. The great migration in January in the Masai Mara is legendary. Botswana and the Okavango Delta are great safari alternatives in summer. Hopefully, you’ll spot the Big 5 then unwind on a beach in Zanzibar.

Africa has so much to offer beyond safaris. Mountain treks, beaches and wine tours in South Africa provide great variety. Madagascar is an up and coming honeymoon destination and offers the chance to go humpback whale watching. Mozambique is also proving to be the perfect post-safari holiday destination where great beaches give way to sand dune camping and trips on traditional dhows take you serenely out to sea.

We hope this has given you food for thought. Whatever you decide to do, we wish you a truly wonderful and memorable honeymoon.
